The Blacked-Out BMW: Every Piece, In Order

You have decided the car is going black. The question nobody answers properly is the order — which piece first, which waits until the weather improves, and what the whole thing costs before you commit. This is that answer, in order, with prices.

Compatible with BMW — Not Genuine BMW Parts.

Which kit do I order — V1 or V2?

Your chassis code decides it, not the year on your V5C. Seventeen V1 chassis were still rolling out of the factory well after 2017, and two V2 chassis were on the road before it, so the year is the least reliable number you own.

My car is a… I order Because
E-series — E46, E90, E92, E60 V1 E and F badge face
F-series — F20, F30, F31, F10, F11, F80, F82 V1 Same face, whatever the build year says
X2 F39, built 2023 V1 F-series chassis. The year is irrelevant
F40 1 Series V2 The one F chassis that takes V2
G-series — G20, G22, G30 (2016), G11 (2015), G01, G05 V2 G badge face, including the ones built before 2017
U-series V2 G-generation face

Chassis not listed above: the fitment guide lists every one we cut for, and the size scout walks you through the measurement.

The measurement, before anything else

This is where most orders go wrong, the same way every time. You are not measuring the badge. You are measuring one quadrant: from the centre of the roundel out to the edge of the coloured field, stopping before the silver divider lines. It is a radius, not a diameter.

  • V1: 23mm bonnet and boot, 20mm bonnet size 2, 18mm boot size 2, 19mm wheels, 11–12mm steering wheel.
  • V2: 22.5mm bonnet, 20.5mm boot, 16mm wheels, 12mm steering wheel.

You will see 82mm and 74mm quoted elsewhere. Those are outer roundel diameters — useful context, wrong number to order from. Measure 82, order 82, and nothing in the envelope fits anything on the car.

If your BMW has had a respray, a bumper off, or a previous owner with a taste for aftermarket badges, those numbers move. The Fitment Promise at £8.00 is the re-cut standing by for that: send a photo and your quadrant measurement, we cut to your dimensions. Not insurance, not cover of any kind. A re-cut.

The order of work

First — bonnet and boot

These are the two roundels in every photograph of your car, including the ones you did not take. Do them first: they are the whole effect, and the rest makes more sense once the front of the car has stopped being blue and white.

A full kit is cut as quadrant pieces for bonnet, boot, steering wheel and wheel centres — Full Black Gloss V1 at £17.00, or Full Black Gloss V2 at £18.88. If you would rather have texture than shine, Full Black Carbon V1 and Full Black Carbon V2 are the same cut in carbon.

On a budget, or testing the idea on one badge first: the half kits cover two quadrants for £9.98 — Half Black Gloss V1, Half Black Carbon V1, Half Black Gloss V2.

Second — wheel centres and steering wheel

The full kit already contains these, so there is no second order to place. The only decision left is whether you fit them the same afternoon or leave the centre caps until the wheels are clean, which most people have decided for them by looking at their wheels.

Fit the steering wheel roundel last. At 11–12mm on V1 and 12mm on V2 it is the smallest quadrant on the car, and the one you look at every day, so do it once your hands are in practice.

Third — behind the kidney grilles

The V-braces sit behind the grilles, and they are why a blacked-out front end can still look half-finished. On most BMWs the bumper stays on the car: four to six screws release the grilles and the braces come out with them. This is the one stage involving a screwdriver and, statistically, drizzle.

SPINE is cut to brace geometry — two strips, 30cm x 7cm, enough for both braces on one car, £17.00. It comes in reflective finishes, which is the honest position: this is where a blacked-out car is allowed a colour, and it only declares itself when a headlight finds it. Pick from red, blue, white, orange, green, yellow or pink. Want it in a badge finish: the pattern is cut across the range, so ask on the support page before you order.

Fourth — the key

Badges black, braces done, and still a scuffed factory fob on the pub table. The Key Wrap is £12.95 in Gloss Black, Carbon, Red or Blue, and it is keyed to the shape of the fob, not the chassis: round fob (E), blade fob (F), rounded fob (G). Match the key to the photo, nothing to look up. For someone else, the boxed gift set is £16.95, with a spare strip and a packing slip carrying no price.

Fifth — one line of colour, if you want one

Optional, and genuinely optional. TRACER pin stripes are pre-cut, flat in daylight and lit under headlights: 0.5cm at £19.97 in white, red or blue, and 1cm at £29.96 in white, orange or green.

The floor is £9.98, which buys two quadrants on one badge — enough to see the idea on your bonnet before committing to the rest.

60+ colours and finishes across 107 published products, so if none of the six is right, the colour finder and which finish pages exist for that reason.

Darkening instead of covering

If you would rather the roundel went dark than black, the tint route covers the full face of each badge in semi-transparent film: Dark Smoke 9-piece, Light Smoke 9-piece or Black Gloss 9-piece at £19.97 — front, rear, four wheel centres and the steering wheel, plus two spares. The 2-piece sets are £12.95: Dark Smoke or Black Gloss. For a badge overlay and a dark smoke tint in one delivery, the Identity Kit is £24.95.

Fitting and delivery

Every kit is UK-made, cut to order in Birmingham from premium 3M cast vinyl — dispatch is 1 to 3 working days. The step-by-step is on the installation page, the rest of the range in the install guides and the fitting instructions. Printed instructions are in the envelope either way. Every piece here is an overlay — it sits on top of what is already there rather than in place of it, and is designed to be removed cleanly.

53,000+ sold, 10,565 eBay feedbacks, 4.3 stars across 568 Amazon ratings, trading since 17 May 2011. None of that fits your bonnet, which is why the quadrant measurement is the only number in this guide that matters.

Measure one quarter, check it against the chart, order the badges: Full Black Gloss V1 at £17.00 for E and F series, Full Black Gloss V2 at £18.88 for G, U and the F40. Add SPINE and the Key Wrap when the weather cooperates. LAUNCH8 at checkout.
